The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation’s mission is to rapidly accelerate the discovery of drugs to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's disease. Worldwide, Alzheimer's disease affects more than 44 million people. The ADDF’s focus on preclinical drug discovery and early-stage clinical trials seeks to fund potential cures that otherwise would not attract investment. By bridging this gap in the drug development pipeline, novel approaches to this devastating disease might be found.
The ADDF operates a primary website, alzdiscovery.org, and a blog which provides scientifically-validated reports on alternative therapies. Pedrera initially worked with the ADDF in 2016, building the new Cognitive Vitality Blog. The partnership has continued to expand over the years, and we have grown to become their chief web development partner.
The ADDF website was originally built many years ago in ExpressionEngine 2 by a third-party. Over time, the website was repeatedly edited and revised by both external partners and internal staff. Best practices were not followed, and the result was a rather convoluted website CMS. What’s more, ExpressionEngine 2 and the website’s PHP version reached “end of life”; the technical foundation of the website would no longer receive patches or updates.
Pedrera was engaged by the ADDF to rebuild their ExpressionEngine website on the latest version, while upgrading the entire technical stack of their website: Centos, NGINX, PHP and MySQL. In addition, Pedrera made enhancements to the website CMS to improve content editing and management for the ADDF staff. A “blocks” layout builder was added, which allows non-technical website managers to create complex web page layouts. A workflow solution was also added, so that draft versions of content could be previewed before going live. In short, we made certain that the ADDF would have a solid base for their website for many years to come.
The ADDF website continues to be enhanced, and its codebase remains sound and logical. Pedrera still develops new features and provides maintenance services, and the site is ready for whatever comes next.
