States at Risk

Climatologists have been warning the public of the dangers of climate change, but the practical reality of a changing climate is often misunderstood by the general public. People may wonder, why does it matter that global temperatures are rising a few degrees?

Working with Climate Central, Pedrera designed and developed a website that explains in clear terms how climate change impacts people’s everyday lives. Website visitors may select a state in the U.S., and see infographics that clarify the impact of climate change over five threats: extreme heat, drought, wildfires, inland flooding and coastal flooding. For instance, Floridians may see the trend of strong hurricanes, while New Yorkers may see how mosquito season has lengthened since 1980.

Pedrera and Climate Central also sought to inform visitors on how public policies in each state were addressing the perilous threats posed by climate change. Each state was assessed for its preparedness for each relevant threat area, and assigned a grade. In doing so, website visitors could not only comprehend the dangers they face, but also understand how well their governments were addressing those dangers.

Pedrera developed the States at Risk website, and the companion Climate Change Preparedness Report Card website, as responsive websites which render optimally on desktop, tablet and phones. Both websites run on a shared installation of the ExpressionEngine content management system. The States at Risk websites have garnered widespread attention on news, governmental and policy publications.
